We work with hundreds of colleges and universities and more than a dozen nonprofit organizations to provide TurboVote to their constituents.

In 2016, our goals in higher education are: 1) to invest in our existing partners (i.e., colleges, universities, and higher ed consortiums) by helping them build more comprehensive programs for voter engagement and; 2) to bring on new partners in a way that sets them up for substantial success in using TurboVote. In order to accomplish these goals, we’re looking for a multitalented organizer and deal-closer to join our team.

Where you will fit in: As the campus outreach lead, you will be responsible for renewing contracts with existing partners and bringing on new partners by generating leads, carrying those leads through the nonprofit equivalent of a “sales cycle,” and closing deals. In this role, you will build relationships with key stakeholders and assess what partnership structure is most likely to lead to success with each institution. You’ll become an expert in the world of higher education and cultivate a passion for promoting civic engagement. Also, you will have the persistence to navigate red tape and work with bureaucratic organizations.

Your job will include:

  • Generating new leads
  • Identifying and creating opportunities for program growth
  • Attending relevant conferences and meetings; identifying speaking opportunities; and promoting the TurboVote program at those events
  • Enthusiastically promoting our mission
  • Diligently collecting and entering data into a constituent management system (a database) so that relationships can be tracked and actively managed

As a Partnerships Associate for TurboVote, you will strengthen relationships with each of our partners and work closely with them to ensure they are using our technology strategically. You’ll become an expert in the world of higher education and cultivate a passion for promoting civic engagement. Also, as the primary contact for some of our partners, you will help test and train partners on new features as we improve the platform. Finally, you will be responsible for renewing the TurboVote annual contract with the higher education partners you regularly work with and may close deals to bring on new partners.

You will:

  • Execute an outreach plan to keep our partners engaged throughout the year and ensure that they’re prepared for elections as they approach.
  • Build relationships with current and potential partners across the country, supporting their campus programs (you’ll spend a lot of time on the phone).
  • Maintain partner records so every partner gets the customized treatment they need.
  • Collect feedback from partner organizations and use it to propose new training materials, best practices, and features.
  • Set ambitious annual voter engagement plans with our partners and follow up to provide the resources necessary to make them happen.

You are:

Happy Election Day! We like to celebrate voting, so here’s some good news to go with casting your ballot.

Now, here are a few exciting updates from our work this cycle:

  • This October, TurboVote passed a milestone with over a quarter of a million voters served.
  • Nationwide, we’re now working with more than 200 colleges and universities to make civic participation a core element of the student experience.
  • USA Today and the National Journal covered our campus voter engagement work.
  • Our Voting Information Project (VIP) team successfully collected and standardized polling place information for all 50 states and DC. Today, that data is live on Google, Facebook, and WordPress, where we expect that tens of millions of voters will see it.

Today also marks the first day of our 2015 operations. In order to continue growing and improving, we’re recruiting six more people across the organization:

  • A Business Development Lead to identify and recruit new college and university partners for TurboVote.
  • A Government Outreach Lead to champion our work with local election officials.
  • A Partner Support Lead to build out implementation materials, provide hands-on trainings, and develop new and better features for our partner colleges and universities.
  • A Director of Communications to improve how we connect with our voters, partners, friends, and the public.
  • And two Software Developers to help us build a service-oriented, Clojure-powered platform capable of powering an ecosystem of voter engagement tools.

Expanding the team and getting through another major election always makes me reflect back on how far we’ve come in the past three years with your support. It’s incredible, but it’s even more exciting to remember that this is still only the beginning!

Ballot Scout, our newest product, helps local election administrators track absentee ballots as they travel through the mail, providing transparency in the vote-by-mail process and making it easier to follow up when things go awry. We also work with the Pew Charitable Trusts and Google to ensure that the Voting Information Project’s data is up-to-date and ready from one election to the next.

These products are the work of our six-person developer team. Languages we use include Ruby, Clojure, ClojureScript, JavaScript, and Python. Our web projects are built with Rails, Pedestal, and Compojure. Our front ends use jQuery, React, and Om. We use SCSS to write our styles. Our databases are MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Datomic. We deploy Docker containers to EC2 servers. Some of our interprocess communication happens via Redis, some of it via Amazon’s SQS, some of it over plain HTTP. And all our code lives on GitHub. You should have experience with some of this and ready to get experience with the rest.

We pair program, collaborate with product managers, and make sure our efforts deliver value to voters. Our flat structure means that you’ll get the opportunity to lead on a variety of projects on a rotating basis.

In the next year we’re looking to rebuild the frontend for turbovote.org, split the Rails backend into independent Clojure services, improve our Ballot Scout webapp and services, and automate the quality-assurance process for Voting Information Project data. Who we are
We’re Democracy Works, a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the idea that voting should fit the way we live today. We’re a team of software developers, public policy wonks, and civic organizers working together to build tools that both voters and election administrators will love.

What we do
We started out in 2010 by building TurboVote, a website that registers voters, streamlines tasks like updating registrations or requesting absentee ballots, and provides timely election reminders so voters don’t forget to vote. As we’ve grown, that focus on bringing modern technology and exceptional design to civic participation remains at the core of our work.

In 2014 we expanded our offerings to serve election administrators directly. Local election offices are constantly innovating to streamline operations and better serve their voters, but the distributed nature of our electoral system can make it difficult to share new tools and best practices across jurisdictions. Our new Government Services initiative is designed to change that, by providing the technology infrastructure needed to scale these innovations and make them available – and affordable – to offices across the country.

Ballot Scout, our first tool for local election officials, tracks ballots sent through the mail using USPS Intelligent Mail barcodes. It’s designed to do all the heavy lifting for election administrators, from helping them implement Intelligent Mail barcodes on their mailings to providing a way to monitor mailed ballots via a dashboard of intelligible, actionable tracking data. The tool also includes a public interface, giving voters the opportunity to look up the status of their ballot online and/or sign up for SMS or email updates about their ballot.

Where you fit: Government Outreach Lead

As the Government Outreach Lead, you will be responsible for growing our new government program. In 2015, you’ll be focused on establishing formal partnerships with local election offices across the country. In this role you will need to immerse yourself in the world of election administration, build relationships with key stakeholders, and think creatively in order to generate revenue opportunities for Ballot Scout and other Democracy Works products.

Your job will include:

  • Creating and identifying opportunities for program growth and new organizational relationships
  • Following up relentlessly with new leads
  • Guiding potential partners through the sales cycle, esp. in lead qualification, research and onboarding
  • Attending relevant conferences and meetings to promote Democracy Works initiatives
  • Recording and maintaining relationship-tracking data
  • Enthusiastically promoting our mission

You are:

As the partner support lead for TurboVote, you will strengthen relationships with each of our partners and work closely with them to ensure they are using our technology strategically. You’ll become an expert in the world of higher education and cultivate a passion for promoting civic engagement. Also, as the primary contact with most of our partners, you will be responsible for communicating their needs to our product design and software development teams, and help test and train partners on new features as we improve the platform.

You will:

  • Develop and execute an outreach plan to keep our partners engaged throughout the year and ensure that they’re prepared for elections as they approach
  • Design systems for contact tracking and reporting so every partner gets the customized treatment they need, and help launch our new CRM
  • Collect feedback from partner organizations and use it to propose new training materials, best practices, and features
  • Serve as a partner advocate in the product development process and act as a liaison between partners and our technology and operations teams
  • Revise and refine our implementation training materials and build them into a comprehensive toolkit for effective voter engagement

In our quest to make voting easier, we’re looking for an experienced communications expert to help us share our mission and work with a larger audience. Whether it’s helping a TurboVote partner school tell the story of how they implemented our tools so other campuses can repeat their successes, or pitching a local newspaper on the innovations their local election office is making, we want to reach more voters through effective storytelling and outreach.

As the Director of Communications, you’ll:

  • Get to know our voters, TurboVote’s college and nonprofit partners, and election administrators nationwide
  • Identify strategic opportunities to use blogging, social media, press releases, conference presentations, and other public communications to expand our reach
  • Craft beautiful written materials across a variety of media
  • Collaborate with our development team, product leads, and outreach leads to polish and refine our institutional voice and standardize our external communications across the staff

You are:

  • Fascinated by how things work, and enjoy making complex processes clear and intuitive to others
  • A wordsmith more inspired by the exactly-right term than a flowery phrase
  • Creative, and able to spot opportunities others don’t see
  • Conversant in technology (and curious to know more!)

  • Developing metrics for communications effectiveness, then monitoring and acting on them
  • Previous work in campaigns or startups preferred but not required
  • Bonus points for familiarity with Creative Suite and an eye for graphic design
