UPDATE: We’ve stopped accepting new applications for this posting as of 11/27. Thank you for your referrals and interest!

At Democracy Works, we believe voting should fit the way we live. To that end, we’ve built TurboVote, a service that tracks all your elections. We’ll send you all the materials and information you need to get registered, stay registered, and cast your ballot in every election, from municipal to national—and we’ll even mail you forms with an addressed, stamped envelope for your local election office.

In our quest to make voting easier, we’re also starting to build tools for local election administrators to help them streamline operations and improve voter services. We’re looking for a senior leader to head this initiative and develop our first-ever service offering for local government.

As the director leading our government work, you’ll be responsible for collaborating with our local election “brain trust”, conducting design research and user testing, developing specifications, and setting priorities for our software development team. We want you to get to know local government, fall in love with election administration, and help us build them a better software toolkit. And after helping us build this technology over the course of 2014, we hope you’ll also want to build up an outreach team so we can scale it nationally. We’ve already begun some early research and design, but in joining the team you’ll:

  • Build relationships with local election officials and help them understand our mission
  • Learn the complete ins, outs, and challenges of election administration
  • Imagine and design elegant, helpful tools that simplify election administrators’ work and improve the voting experience
  • Test, listen, and refine user experiences they and their staffs will love
  • Love serving small government offices
  • Run spirited spec conversations and efficient sprint planning meetings
  • Translate needs to features, and features to sprints

You are:

  • A fantastic listener
  • Experienced in providing public services
  • A designer, whether by formal training or cultivated interest
  • Just tech-y enough to handle wireframes and prototypes (familiar with HTML/CSS/Photoshop, with bonus points for Javascript/Python/Ruby)
  • Comfortable moving between startups and suits
  • Creative with bureaucracy and a foe of red tape

You have experience in:

  • Leading teams
  • Conducting user tests
  • Product management
  • Providing excellent customer/constituent service for a diverse audience
  • Working for governments, big corporations, or another cautious, deliberate work culture

Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Democracy Works also offers a competitive benefits package including health insurance and vacation. We’re based in Brooklyn, NY and Denver, CO, and we hope you’ll want to join our Brooklyn team—though we’ll consider remote arrangements for the perfect candidate.

To apply, send a resume and pithy introduction to Katy and Seth at work@turbovote.org with the subject “Will design for democracy.”

We are committed to building an awesome and truly diverse team, so we strongly encourage applicants of all races, colors, political party associations, religions (or lack thereof), national origins, sexual orientations, genders, sexes, ages, handicaps, and branches of military service. Feel free to contact work@turbovote.org if you have any questions about our commitment to diversity or about general hiring practices.
