Three weeks ago I asked Ellen Miller, the executive director and co-founder of the Sunlight Foundation, if she had any advice about where I could raise some funds for TurboVote on short notice.

There was this little election coming up and I wanted to make sure that I could hire additional engineering talent for the final stretch.

Instead of advice, she generously offered TurboVote a $10,000 matching grant to improve our tech capacity — making it possible for the site to run even smoother and faster as traffic heats up. And within a week, we had found a donor that Sunlight could match: Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and craigconnects, as well as a Sunlight board director.

Together, Sunlight and Craig, are providing TurboVote with an exceptionally helpful boost at exactly the right moment.

I’m also just very grateful to both Ellen and Craig for their leadership in the world of civic technology. Ellen was one of TurboVote’s earliest supporters, providing us with a mini-grant in 2010 to fund our pilot project and Craig has become a friend of ours over the past few months as he has ramped up his own advocacy work on behalf of voting and voter protection.
